ATTENTION DEFICIT DISORDERS (ADD)
What is ADD?
If your child continuously has difficulties listening, concentrating, sitting still, remembering or finishing tasks, he or she may be suffering from a condition known as Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD). Most often, ADD is first noticed in school situations. The Neuropsychology Department at the Fort Wayne Neurological Center had specialists who can help identify the disorder and provide appropriate treatment.
Problem Areas
Children with ADD often displkay problems in three basic areas:
- Impulsiveness: The children frequently fail to think before they act. They have difficulty anticipating consequences of their behaviors which result in social problems, poor anger control, excitability, and unpredictable behavior.
- Inattentive/ Distractible: ADD Children are frequently distractible, disorganized, have short attention spans, have difficulty following directions and staying "on task." These problems often cause poor performance in many situations, primarily in school.
- Hyperactivity: Many ADD children exhibit physical restlessness and over-activity. They also have difficulty controlling body movements and tend to over-react to many situations. They display extremes of emotions which contribute to their social difficulties, especially with peer interactions.
How Can We Help at FWNC
Specialists at the Fort Wayne Neurological Center provide help by offering solutions to the child's problems. Most therapy involves the family, as well as the child. Through investigation into the child's family life, school life, and other behavioral situations, the source of the child's problem can be identified.
Behavior management programs are then developed and designed to treat your child's specific needs. In some cases, the child's pediatrician or family doctor will be consulted regarding the use of appropriate medication.
ADD-related Neuropsychological services at the Fort Wayne Neurological Center include:
- Diagnostic evaluation and testing to assess your child’s attention difficulties as well as determine other factors that may be contributing to your child’s problems. The evaluation also assesses your child’s individual learning style, strengths, and weaknesses.
- Individual and family counseling.
- consultation regarding your child’s performance in school.
- Development of behavior management programs designed specifically around you, your child’s and your family’s individual need.
- Consultation with you and your family physician regarding possible medical treatment.
